Eli Lilly funds new Zyprexa study
- October 25, 2005
In response to thousands of patient complaints that Zyprexa causes diabetes-related weight gain, Eli Lilly and Co. has decided to fund a study about how to reduce the risk of Zyprexa weight gain. Eli Lilly agreed earlier this year to settle some 8,000 defective drug claims totaling $1 billion for those who have suffered significant weight gain as a result of taking Lilly's best-selling drug, Zyprexa. Thousands of consumers claim they were not informed that Zyprexa could cause weight gain and increase one's risk of developing diabetes.
The new Zyprexa study will be conducted by Menlo Park, CA-based pharmaceutical company, Corcept Therapeutics. In animal studies, this company has found their drug, Corlux showed promise in reducing the weight gain caused by Zyprexa. The company will now conduct human clinical trials to test the safety and effectiveness of using these two drugs in combination. This test will only involve healthy male participants. The two companies do not intend to make a combination drug.
Eli Lilly has agreed to fund the research and supply olanzapine (Zyprexa) for the study. In exchange, Corcept has agreed to share the research with Eli Lilly.
