Zyprexa Newest Target in Illinois

- February 4, 2006

Eli Lilly and Company, the maker of Zyprexa, has been accused of failing to warn doctors and patients about Zyprexa's propensity to cause diabetes. Seven people have filed a lawsuit in St. Clair County alleging that the drug Zyprexa caused the onset of their diabetes or pancreatitis.

In 2001, Zyprexa was approved for the short-term treatment of acute manic episodes associated with bipolar disorder. Primarily used to treat schizophrenia, Zyprexa is the third best selling drug on the market.

The increase of diabetes-related illnesses associated with drugs of this class prompted the FDA to inform all manufacturers of atypical anti-psychotic drugs that all drugs must bear a warning on all labeling. Eli Lilly waited until March 1, 2004 to begin advising of the new warnings, despite the FDA mandate issued in September of 2003. The new labeling, complete with a warning, did not appear until 2005.

Plaintiff's claim that Lilly was aware of the large numbers of adverse event reports on file with the Food and Drug Administration in association with Zyprexa. Also, plaintiffs claim that if they had been adequately warned about of the potential life threatening side effects, they could have chosen other prescription medications and avoided Zyprexa altogether.

Zyprexa negatively and detrimentally affected the patients' blood sugar and endocrine systems gradually over time. These patients had no knowledge that this was happening to their bodies until Lilly finally introduced the warning label.

According to the complaint, Lilly recklessly and wantonly failed to warn patients as well as the general public about the risks associated with taking Zyprexa. Also, the claims state that Lilly deceived the public by withholding findings of various studies including its own concerning the life threatening dangers of Zyprexa.

Each plaintiff is now seeking damages in excess of $150,000 in addition to the costs of the lawsuit.

Zyprexa Side Effects Reports
Zyprexa and diabetes link
Whether or not Zyprexa and similar atypical antipsychotic drugs are linked to diabetes is a question that will be answered in the Zyprexa lawsuits that have been filed. Patients have reported deadly instances of Zyprexa side effects. There are 288 reported cases of Zyprexa diabetes cases, including 23 deaths. Zyprexa maker Eli Lilly has enjoyed large success with Zyprexa, with the drug currently the world’s top selling schizophrenia medication. The Zyprexa side effects causing Zyprexa lawsuits may begin slowing the company’s current financial success. For more information on Zyprexa side effects contact us.
