Zyprexa Settlement Delay Enrages Judge
- June 6, 2006
US District Judge Jack B. Weinstein claims it is "intolerable" that not a single claimant has been paid from a $700 million Zyprexa settlement. This Zyprexa settlement, was signed in June 2005 between the drug's maker Eli Lilly and thousands of people who have suffered serious injury from this antipsychotic medication.
Eight thousand claimants were part of this Zyprexa settlement deal. However, only about one-half of these claimants have submitted sufficient documentation of their Zyprexa injuries so that they can receive compensation. As for the others, their attorneys have not filled the proper paper work. The settlement requires that 90 percent of the claimants' documentation be submitted before the deal can proceed.
Judge Weinstein is infuriated. He wants the claimant's attorneys to step to the plate and fulfill their duties to their clients by submitting the necessary documents. The attorney appointed by Weinstein to administer the settlement believes all the documentation will be submitted by August 2006.
