Eli Lilly Targeted in Another Zyprexa Lawsuit
- October 5, 2006
AEli Lilly, the maker of Zyprexa, was recently targeted in another lawsuit. This latest suit marks the second one filed in a Baton Rouge federal court against the pharmaceutical company in less than a week.
Nicholas Hoffman, who used Zyprexa for two years, claimed that the controversial drug caused him to develop severe diabetes. According to his lawsuit, Lilly failed to provide adequate warnings about the increased risk of diabetes associated with the drug.
Four days earlier, a Baton Rouge woman filed a similar Zyprexa lawsuit on behalf of her son. Both lawsuits are seeking unspecified damages.
Zyprexa is a widely prescribed anti-psychotic drug. In 1996, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the drug for use in treating bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. The drug is also sometimes prescribed to treat anxiety and attention deficit disorder.
The drug company recently settled about 8,000 lawsuits for a reported $700 million. Those lawsuits involved individuals who experienced adverse health effects because of Zyprexa between 1996 and 2003. In 2004, Lilly added a heightened warning to the drug’s label.
Attorney Robert Salim, who is representing both Hoffman and the mother who filed on behalf of her son, said he has filed approximately 30 other Zyprexa lawsuits in Louisiana.
