The Controversy of Zyprexa Being Overprescribed

Lilly Considers Settling Case for $1 Billion
Eli Lilly and federal prosecutors are reportedly talking about settling the investigation into one of their top-selling medications.
The anti-psychotic medication, Zyprexa, has been controversial over the past year and could force the drug company to pay more than $1 billion to the federal and state government.
Discussions of a Settlement
According to reports, several people involved with the investigation have confirmed that Eli Lilly is considering the settlement.
The fine would allegedly be the largest ever paid by a drug manufacturer for breaking federal laws regarding how they market their products.
Drug Falsely Marketed
Zyprexa was only approved by the FDA to treat those suffering from schizophrenia and for severe cases of bipolar disorder.
However, documents show that from 2000 to 2003, the company encouraged doctors to prescribe the medication to those who had dementia and mild cases of bipolar disorder.
In doing so, Eli Lilly illegally marketed the medication and has been under a great deal of scrutiny ever since.
