Mother Files Zyprexa Lawsuit Over Son's Diabetes
- September 14, 2006
A Louisiana woman has filed a lawsuit against Eli Lilly and Co., alleging that the company's drug Zyprexa caused her son to develop diabetes after only three months of use.
In addition to diabetes, Catherine Harrison claimed that her son suffered extreme pain, including severe stomach and bowel problems, as a result of taking Zyprexa. According to the complaint, her son will have lifelong medical bills.
The suit also alleges that Lilly failed to provide adequate labeling of the drug to warn of the potential risk of severe adverse side effects such as diabetes. Lilly added a heightened warning to Zyprexa's label in 2004 to include the risk of hyperglycemia and diabetes. The boy began using the drug in 2003.
Zyprexa is an anti-psychotic widely prescribed to treat bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. The Food and Drug Administration approved the drug in 1996 but has since determined that it carries a risk of elevated blood glucose.
Harrison filed the lawsuit earlier this week in the U.S. District Court in Baton Rouge. She is seeking unspecified damages on behalf of her son.
