Federal and State Governments Crack Down on Drug Marketing
- March 2, 2007
Drug companies are notorious for their hyper-aggressive, often deceptive business practices. Recent litigation against giant pharmaceutical companies like Eli Lilly, Merck, and Johnson & Johnson has prompted federal and state investigators to crack down on shady industry practices.
Drug manufacturers are under investigation for anything from inappropriate pricing to fraudulent marketing. Fines are being implemented, lawsuits filed, and there's no sign the crackdowns are going to slow any time soon.
"No doubt there's a lot more attention being paid to these issues than there has been in the past," says Tufts University professor Jerome P. Kassirer.
Federal and state governments are sending the industry a clear message: Clean up your act or pay the price.
Eli Lilly is just one of many companies under investigation for deceptive business practices with regard to its blockbuster antipsychotic Zyprexa . The company has been accused of marketing the drug for off-label uses and concealing its dangers among other things.
The company has settled thousands of lawsuits, and is facing hundreds more—a number of which have been filed by state governments.
