Connecticut Sues Zyprexa
-April 7, 2008
It was recently announced that Connecticut would be joining at least nine other states in suing Eli Lilly and Co., the drug manufacturers of Zyprexa.
Zyprexa is the antipsychotic medication that has been the subject of much debate over the past year.
Lawsuit Accuses Drug Makers
The lawsuit reportedly accuses Eli Lilly of running an illegal marketing campaign to promote and sell Zyprexa for unapproved uses.
The company was allegedly marketing the medication to be used in off-label ways, including for the treatment of children.
According to Attorney General Richard Blumenthal, the Zyprexa campaign also hid risks that were linked to the drug, including:
- Weight gain
- Diabetes
- Cardiovascular problems
CT Seeks Compensation
Blumenthal says that Connecticut’s lawsuit is seeking to recover the $190 million that the state’s medical assistance program spent on the medication throughout the past decade.
