Zyprexa Side Effects
In the U.S., comparative safety and effectiveness studies between old and new drugs are not required for drug approval, thus allowing approval to occur without evidence of increased effectiveness over already existent treatment options. This “flaw”, as some people consider it, lets less effective and even dangerous drugs on the market, which some experts believe is evident by Zyprexa side effects reported.
Zyprexa has been linked to diabetes,
hyperglycemia, and neuroleptic malignant syndrome, carrying fears so great
that it led Japan and the European Union to include warnings about the sometimes-fatal
Zyprexa side effects. Public Citizen consumer group believes the FDA has done
little to warn physicians or patients about the risks of hyperglycemia, diabetes,
and ketoacidosis with Zyprexa, but ZyprexaSideEffectsLawyer.Com
has provided information on Zyprexa side effects for consumers. For more information

Connecticut Sues Zyprexa
It was recently announced that Connecticut would be joining at least nine other states in suing Eli Lilly and Co., the drug manufacturers of Zyprexa.
Zyprexa is the antipsychotic medication that has been the subject of much debate over the past year.
FDA issues limited Zyprexa warning information
In November 2001, the Journal of the American Medical Association medical officers from the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research and a Duke University Medical Center physician first reported a possible link between Zyprexa and hyperglycemia in adolescents. Other FDA staff members then published a report in a December 2001 American Journal of Medicine linking Zyprexa to diabetes. Both Zyprexa reports used information from the FDA’s adverse drug reaction database.
The FDA has identified at least 384 reports of diabetes because of Zyprexa use, with the majority of cases appearing with six months of the start date. The Japanese Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, as well as the British medical equivalent to the FDA received reports of serious hyperglycemia and diabetes amongst Zyprexa patients and issued warnings accordingly. In the U.S., no such action was taken to warn physicians and patients of Zyprexa risks.
The FDA Zyprexa risk of diabetes and hyperglycemia brief reference is “buried deep in the adverse reactions section of the drug’s labeling” according to the Public Citizen consumer group. The group’s advice to Zyprexa patients is to follow the advice given from the Japanese drug regulatory authorities. Zyprexa...Or
is it?
High priced prescription medications have resulted in fake, mislabeled,
and mishandled drugs to appear on the market. Pharmacists alerted the FDA
that white pills labeled “aspirin” were being put in Zyprexa
bottles. There have also been counterfeit bottles of Zyprexa that have been
found to move through Florida over the last two years. Zyprexa patients
should be careful about where their prescription drugs originate from as
to avoid any increased risks of suffering deadly and serious effects.
Wonder drug or medical liability?
The introduction of Zyprexa and other atypical antipsychotic drugs were
seen as a breakthrough in schizophrenia treatment. Patients used to have to
endure many side effects to treat their psychosis, but Zyprexa’s approval
in 1996 gave many people new hope. For a while, Zyprexa appeared to be the
solution for many schizophrenic patients who were suffering a large amount
of side effects from previous medications.
Soon Zyprexa’s popularity allowed the drug to become the world’s best selling schizophrenia drug, bringing in 40% of the overall $11.08 billion company sales for maker Eli Lilly. Zyprexa is expected to top at $4 billion in sales for 2003. After all the momentum and growing popularity of Zyprexa, now there are studies indicating Zyprexa may not be the wonder drug everyone thought it was.
In the U.S., measures to warn physicians and patients of the Zyprexa side effects were not as extensive as in Japan and Britain. Public Citizen criticized the FDA for doing too little and thinks that the March 5, 2002 revision was an inadequate action. The FDA included risks of suffering the Zyprexa side effects diabetes and hyperglycemia but only made brief reference to it and put it deep in the adverse reactions section where it could not be clearly identified.
