Zyprexa Side Effects News
"Zyprexa May Be Linked To Pancreatitis"
September 2, 2003
Researchers have found initial evidence that a link between Zyprexa use and
other newer schizophrenia drug effects could include pancreatitis, a dangerous
inflammation of the pancreas. Warning that these reports require further research,
studies looked at patients using four antipsychotic drugs and examined all
pancreatitis cases reported to the FDA or written up in medical journals between
January 1981 and February 2002. More instances of pancreatitis were seen to
occur in Clozaril, Zyprexa, and Risperdal patients.
People using Zyprexa alone had 62 instances of pancreatitis of the 192 cases found to occur within the four antipsychotic drugs. Of the 192-pancreatitis occurrences, 22 resulted in death. A definitive link between Zyprexa and pancreatitis has not yet been established though the findings have raised concern. Within the last couple of years, atypical antipsychotics like Zyprexa have been linked to diabetes and hyperglycemia, causing controversy over Zyprexa side effect risks.
